Re: Flugzeugwracks in der Sahara

Remains of a Libyan C-130 (Lockheed Hercules) at the Yebbi Bou airstrip. Remains of the nose section is at the opposite end of the runway.

Re: Ägypten - Eastern Desert

Oh dear, got myself in trouble again ... and I haven't even mentioned yet that I'm just back from the Tibesti ... :h:

I have not found any trail yet that would fit A.P. but looking. The best candidates are either someone from the Desert Survey or possibly a British officer who owned a car.

Re: Ägypten - Eastern Desert

A good idea, but I'm afraid a false trail. Almasy/Esterhazy never went into the Eastern Desert, they drove down to Aswan along the Nile, from there they took the Nile ferry to Wadi Halfa, and on the return journey the car was shipped from Port Sudan to Suez. Also Esterhazy used Antal as the principa...

Re: Libyen nach der Wahl

Last night I saw a Libyan Airlines A320 depart for Labraq Airport (near Al Bayda in the Jebel Akhdar) from Istambul at 2am, delayed from a scheduled 7:30pm. It appears that the Libyan airspace is open at least in a limited way, and LY managed to move some aircraft to resume some operations. Another ...

Re: Aegypten nach der Wahl

Ursula is correct. The incident happened at the checkpoint on the border of the New Valley and Giza (Bahariya) governorates, a little over half-way on the Bahariya-Farafra road. These checkpoints are manned by army border guards (responsible for the desert borders). I cannot recognize the place on M...

Re: Ist Thuraya in Namibia sinnvoll zu nutzen?

If the signal is blocked by terrain, 1-2 metres will not make a difference. However 10 degrees is not that low, usually after climbing a local high point there was good signal. In any case, MTC does have very good coverage except in the more remote Northern areas, so the chances are you will not nee...

Re: Teilreisewarnung Tschad 19.01.2015

Hello Alexander, Sorry, if you think my post is inappropriate in this thread, please move elsewhere or delete, there will be no hard feelings. I have made it clear at the beginning of the post that this is a personal assessment, limited to a narrow geographical region of Chad, based on my observatio...

Re: Ist Thuraya in Namibia sinnvoll zu nutzen?

I use Thuraya when we go to the Upper-Brandberg, while on some higher points there is occasional mobile reception, for most of the upper areas of the mountain this is the best emergency communication. For me it is very handy as this way I can use the same phone both in Namibia and the Sahara. Thuray...
