Ist Thuraya in Namibia sinnvoll zu nutzen?

Wenn ich mir die Abdeckung von Thuraya im südlichen Afrika hier ansehe, scheint mir die Mitnahme eine Thuraya Telefons nach Namibia ziemlich sinnlos zu sein.
Sehe ich das richtig oder kann jemand das Gegenteil belegen?

Ich bin mit meinem Thuraya sehr zufrieden und habe damit sowohl aus dem Norden Namibias (zwischen Caprivi und Etosha) telefoniert, als auch aus dem ostsibirischen Yakutien und aus Japan (wo damals kein GSM funktionierte). Der Vorteil für mich ist die Nutzbarkeit meiner ständigen o2-Nummer für normales GSM-Roaming UND für Satellitentelefonate.

Die normale GSM-Netzabdeckung in Namibia ist sehr gut. Wenn jedoch einsame, riskante Gegenden in Namibia angesteuert werden, würde ich auf jeden Fall Iridium kaufen/mieten.

Wenn du in entlegenen Gegenden unterwegs sein möchtest, dann ist das Thuraya im Norden für das kaokoveld, das nördliche Damaraland, Caprivi und den Khaudom NP normalerweise ausreichend. Der Rest des Nordens ist nicht so einsam und/oder hat GSM-Abdeckung. Ich war südlich von Purros auch schon mal auf das Thuraya angewiesen. 4 von 5 Balken Signalstärke gehabt und Telefonieren war kein Problem. In der Südhälfte des Landes kannst Du das Thuraya vergessen.

I use Thuraya when we go to the Upper-Brandberg, while on some higher points there is occasional mobile reception, for most of the upper areas of the mountain this is the best emergency communication. For me it is very handy as this way I can use the same phone both in Namibia and the Sahara. Thuraya just about works in Uis too, but once descending along the southern parts of the Brandberg, the mountain blocks the signal as satellite elevation is just 5 degrees. Any larger hill towards the N-N.E. will block the signal until driving considerably farther North.

naja, wenn das Problem der Winkel ist, mit der der Satellit zur Erde steht (der so gering ist, daß die Erde das Signal blockt) - was ist dann mit einem Repeater, der z. B. aufs Autodach geschraubt wird und von dort in die Höhe ragt ?

Als ich in Namibia war, hatte MTC Namibia einen guten GSM Empfang, allerdings war ich nicht wirklich offroad. Eine solche prepaid karte würd ich mir kaufen, weil roaming sehr teuer ist.

If the signal is blocked by terrain, 1-2 metres will not make a difference. However 10 degrees is not that low, usually after climbing a local high point there was good signal.

In any case, MTC does have very good coverage except in the more remote Northern areas, so the chances are you will not need a satphone at all. If you buy a local SIM, you can have good, cheap and reliable communications pretty much everwhere (except on some remoter "D" roads). Even on the Brandberg we use the mobile phone 50-60% of the time, the Thuraya is for emergency backup only. It is good f you already have one because of traveling in the Sahara or in Arabia, but I would not recommend buying/renting a Thuraya just for Namibia.
