ANKARA - Ein türkischer Soldat wurde getötet und vier weitere wurden verletzt bei der Explosion einer Landmine im Südosten der Türkei (Bergregion bei Semdinli in südöstlicher Provinz Hakkari). Die Landminen wurden gemäß Presse von PKK verlegt.

TURKEY-SYRIA: DOMESTIC FIRMS TO CLEAR MINES ALONG BORDER

ANKARA - More than 30,000 hectares of land along the Turkish-Syrian border will become available for agricultural use providing employment opportunities for around 6,000 families once the mines along the Syrian border are cleared, Today's Zaman reports. A tender for mine clearance along the Turkish-Syrian border will be open only to domestic companies, upon recommendation of the Turkish General Staff. A bill concerning mine clearance along the Turkish-Syrian border was discussed at the parliamentary Planning and Budget Commission on June 11, and a memorandum from the General Staff suggested that leasing the land to a foreign company for 44 years for mine cleanup under the contract terms would be inappropriate for security reasons. The commission therefore amended the bill to only allow domestic firms to be contracted for the project. According to the revised bill, a domestic company will be able to lease the minefields for up to 44 years, clearing the mines in a maximum of five years. It many not use the land for agriculture during the de-mining period but may permit agricultural use of the fields once the process is complete, for a total maximum period of 44 years. (ANSAmed).

TURKEY GETS RID OF ITS LANDMINES ALONG THE SYRIAN BORDER

ANKARA - Landmines laid along the Turkish-Syrian border are being removed for the construction of a new border checkpoint, Turkish Daily News reports. Heated work is continuing on the 200-acre area between Mohris Hill in the Nusaybin district of Mardin, where the checkpoint will be built, and the Demirtepe station with temperatures now hovering around 45 degrees Celsius. The removal of mines is being performed by the Turkish company, TUSAN, and its German partner, TAUBER. The working teams seek to eliminate 170 antipersonnel and antitank mines per month. Detlef Jungfermann, a German mine expert, and his team already found two mines made in the United States in 1954 using a device called "mine rat." Jungfermann said landmines remain functional for 100 years from the date of manufacture. The new checkpoint is being funded by the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey, or TOBB. The area affected by landmines is found along Turkey's longest land border, 877 kilometers, stretching from the province of Hatay on the Mediterranean Coast to the province of Sirnak in the Southeast, where the Turkish, Syrian and Iraqi borders meet. Almost all the landmines were buried on the Turkish side of the border and, for years, Syria has undertaken efforts to clear landmines from its side. Since 1996, there have been pronouncements by Turkish authorities about the government creating initiatives to clear mines from the border. However, only in early 2004 did government agencies reach an agreement to begin this work.

SYRIA-TURKEY: ANKARA ASKS NATO AID TO CLEAR MINES ON BORDER

ANKARA - NATO must help Ankara to clear the minefields which still exist along the border between Turkey and Syria. The mines date back to the years of tension between the two countries. General Metin Gurak, spokesman for the Turkish Defence chief of staff, was speaking during the customary Friday press conference. Relations between Ankara and Damascus have been better for about 15 years. Since then, many humanitarian groups and farmers in the area have called for the region to be cleared of mines. According to reliable estimates, there are around 615,000 unexploded mines scattered in the area surrounding the Turkish-Syrian border. Most of them were laid at the end of the 1950s during the cold war period which saw the involvement of Turkey, a member of NATO, and Syria, allied to the then Soviet Union.

TURKEY PASSES BILL TO CLEAR MINES ON SYRIAN BORDER

ANKARA - The Turkish Parliament approved early Thursday a controversial bill that might allow foreign companies to de-mine the country's border with Syria in return for the right to farm the fertile land for up to 44 years, as Anatolia agency reports. Parliament began discussing the bill on May 12 but deliberations lasted until Thursday over objections from opposition parties. The Turkish Parliament voted 255-91 after opposition parties, arguing that the law was in breach of the nation's interests, threatening to take the law to the Constitutional Court. According to the law, the Turkish National Defense Ministry will invite companies and institutions at first; which if failing, the Finance Ministry will open a tender If both options fail, a local or foreign company could be allowed to carry out the works in return for utilizing the land for agricultural purposes. Speculation an Israeli company would win the contract drew widespread criticism, forcing the government to rewrite parts of the bill. The government had defended the bill, which sees the possible leasing of the 510-km long area for agricultural use, as a way to lure foreign investment as Turkey struggles to return to economic growth. After ratifying the Ottawa Treaty ban on anti-personnel landmines in 2003, Turkey has until 2014 to clear its border territories of mines. The Turkish-Syrian border is riddled with some 615,000 landmines, planted since the 1950s to prevent first smugglers and then PKK terrorists from crossing.

TURKEY-SYRIA: PRESIDENTE GUL SIGNS BORDER MINE BILL INTO LAW

ANKARA - Turkish President Abdullah Gul signed into law a controversial bill on Tuesday to clear mines along the country's border with Syria, the Hurriyet daily website reports. The law arranging "demining of mine fields along the Syrian border and the principles for inviting tenders for this task" was ratified and sent to the Prime Ministry for proclamation, a statement issued by the Presidency Press Center said. ANKARA - Ein türkischer Soldat wurde getötet und drei weitere wurden verletzt bei der Explosion einer Landmine im Südosten der Türkei (Provinz Hakkari). Die Landminen wurden gemäß Presse von PKK verlegt. Der letzte tödliche Unfall in der Region datiert vom 7. Dezember mit 7 Toten.

ANKARA - Ein 15-jähriger Junge wurde bei der Explosion einer Landmine getötet und zwei gleichaltrige Jungen schwer verletzt. Eins der Kinder ist zufällig auf die Mine getreten ... Das ganze ist passiert in der Nähe eines Dorfs in der Provinz Sirnak im Südosten der Türkei, nahe der Grenze zu Irak.
