UNESCO AND EGYPT TO BUILD WORLD'S FIRST UNDERWATER MUSEUM

UNESCO and the Egyptian government are developing a project to found the world's first underwater museum in Alexandria, Egypt, to showcase underwater archaeology and make use of the rich cultural and historical assets located underwater in the Bay of Alexandria. It will be possible to view some of the findings at the Royal Venaria Palace in Turin in the 'Egypt, Submerged Treasures' exhibition, which will be held February 7-May 31 2009. The museum will be built by the Egyptian government, with UNESCO providing an international scientific advisory commission. The first of its kind, the museum will be built partly above and partly below water, and will present a series of challenges to engineers, including visitor safety and limitations in visibility. The submerged area, which will allow visitors to observe archaeological remains on the seabed, marks important progress in underwater archaeological exhibits.
