A massive arms cache has been uncovered in eastern Democratic Republic Congo on the farm of renegade soldier Bosco Ntaganda, the army has told the BBC. Other heavy weapons were found in two other locations in North Kivu, the scene of recent fighting against army mutineers, Col Innocent Gahizi said. He agreed with analysts that a move by some mutineers to appoint a new leader was a ploy to protect Gen Ntaganda.
Heavy fighting broke out in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo when a deadline expired for army mutineers to surrender. Thousands of Congolese villagers fled over the Ugandan border overnight, officials in Uganda told the BBC.
GOMA, DR Congo — Government forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo launched airstrikes Saturday against mutineers near the Rwandan border, where a rebel leader known as the "Terminator" was said to be hiding. The increasing violence in and around Virunga national park, on the border with Rwanda and Uganda and famed for its volcanos and mountain gorilla population, has also led to the recent death of a ranger [...] "Two war planes have joined in the fighting. They have bombed the hills of Runyonyi and Chanzu" [...] government troops were also using heavy weapons and had asked the local population to leave "so there is no confusion between civilians and the enemy."[...] Bikenge had also been hit. "But the mutineers are still in control of those areas," which they captured on Thursday, and don't appear "rattled", he told AFP. The mutineers, however, failed to capture an army base at Rumangabo, he added. Loyalist forces have also flushed rebels out of Bunagana, a town on the border with Uganda, army officers said.
Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court on Tuesday urged judges to convict two Congolese warlords of commanding the fighters who wiped out a village in 2003, killing more than 200 civilians, including women children and the elderly. Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said that evidence presented at the trial of Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo proved they "are guilty beyond any doubt" of carefully planning and executing the Feb. 24, 2003, attack on the village of Bogoro.
Army troops clashed with ex-rebel mutineers in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday in fighting close to a national park famed for its rare gorillas. The two sides have been mired in tit-for-tat jungle clashes for weeks after the ex-rebel soldiers, integrated into the army under a 2009 peace deal, started to mutiny, complaining of poor conditions. The latest fighting started early Saturday, when mutineers attacked loyalist positions in the Rutshuru territory in eastern Nord-Kivu province, a military official told AFP. Mutiny spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Vianney Kazarana, however, said loyalist forces had initiated the fighting. Loyalist soldiers fell back about two kilometres (one mile) before regrouping and shelling the mutineers in fighting that lasted until nightfall [...] The region melds into Virunga National Park on the Ugandan border
KINSHASA (Reuters) - Twenty five mutineers loyal to a renegade general have been killed in clashes with the army in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the government said on Monday [...] The defectors loyal to Ntaganda and another mutineer, Colonel Sultani Makenga, were killed after attempting an assault on the town of Bunagana in North Kivu province on Saturday, government spokesman Lambert Mende said. "They were repulsed and during the fighting they lost 25 guys ... (government forces) may have had injuries, but no deaths," Mende said by telephone. Mende said the failed attack had been carried out with support from fighters from the Rwandan FDLR rebel group, which has been operating in Congo for more than 15 years and is accused of carrying out widespread human rights abuses.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is slowly recovering from a conflict known as Africa's first world war, which led to the loss of some five million lives between 1994 and 2003, however many eastern areas are still plagued by violence, as various rebel groups continue to operate there. What has the fighting been about?
Rwandan citizens have been recruited and trained to fight in support of army mutineers in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, according to a confidential UN report obtained by the BBC. "The United Nations has conducted interviews with 11 combatants who abandoned their positions in the mountainous forests on the border between the DRC and Rwanda. "The report (...) describes these deserters as Rwandan citizens recruited in Rwanda on the pretext of joining the national army, including a minor," the BBC said.
In the eastern DR Congo, while the exodus of people into neighbouring Rwanda and Uganda has slowed considerably, the recent fighting has displaced large numbers of people within North Kivu province. UNHCR staff in North Kivu say most of the internal displacement is taking place in Rutshuru territory, north of the provincial capital, Goma. Between May 10 and May 20, one of our local NGO partners registered more than 40,000 internally displaced people in Jomba and Bwesa sectors. These are the latest figures available, but our field staff say there was fighting in southern Rutshuru's Runyonyi area on Saturday between government forces and renegade soldiers loyal to former rebel commander Bosco Ntaganda. The fighting appears to have stopped since Sunday.
New evidence has emerged that the Rwandan military is aiding rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Human Rights Watch says. The rights group says former rebels have described how Rwanda provided the rebellion with hundreds of recruits and also with weapons and ammunition. Rwanda also offered shelter to renegade leader Bosco Ntaganda, wanted by the International Criminal Court, HRW says.
Congolese soldiers and rebels clashed at an army base in eastern Congo, the government and a rebel said on Wednesday, killing at least 19 people in the latest outbreak of violence that has forced tens of thousands to flee their homes. The government said the attack had been carried out by Mai Mai fighters, linked to ex-rebels who were at one point integrated into the army but deserted in recent weeks to protest Kinshasa's decision to arrest a renegade general, Bosco Ntaganda [...] The attack by Mai Mai fighters loyal to General Kakule Sikula Lafontaine on Tuesday morning targeted an army base in the Lubero territory of North Kivu province, government spokesman Lambert Mende said. "They attacked our barracks and killed some of our military personnel," Mende said, adding that 11 Congolese soldiers and 8 rebels were killed. Lafontaine told Reuters that his men had suffered one fatality and killed 31 soldiers in the clashes, adding that his forces had seized ammunition and arms, including a mortar.
