Sudan begrüßt Urteil zur Grenzziehung
22.07.2009 - DW-World

Sudanese foes sign new peace deal
19.08.2009 - BBC
Northern and southern Sudan have signed a deal aimed at bolstering a fragile peace accord they signed in 2005, in front of the US envoy to the country. Scott Gration said the deal, which agrees how to take Sudan to next year's election, heralded a "brighter future".

South Sudan gets back on track
10.04.2010 - BBC
The rumbling of the railway from the north which for years ignited fear in rural villages of southern Sudan is now being heard as a signal of the peace. "When the train used to come, there was nothing good it brought to us - only soldiers who came to raid our cattle and kill people," Paul Natale, administrative head of Aweil town, told the BBC. "Now the train will be coming with goods that will be cheaper. It will improve the life of the people," he says. His office is off the main dusty thoroughfare in the former garrison town - once a base for the northern army and Arab Murahaleen militia, who also used the train to carry southerners back north as slaves ... mehr

Sudan's north-south faultline worries about war
03.09.2010 - AP
AGOK, Sudan — Four months before Southern Sudan is scheduled to hold an independence referendum, tensions are already rising in this oil-rich region that sits on the expected future border, with allegations the central government is using violence and ethnic cleansing to sway the vote. Leaders in Sudan's north and south are in a tug-of-war over the central Sudan region of Abyei, home to oil fields worth hundreds of millions of dollars. In conjunction with Southern Sudan's independence referendum scheduled for Jan. 9, Abyei is to vote the same day to decide if it should belong in Sudan's north or in a possible new country in the south ... mehr

South Sudan leader warns of violence if vote delayed
17.09.2010 - Reuters
WASHINGTON - Sudan risks "violence on a massive scale" if there is any delay to a planned January referendums that will likely split the oil-rich African nation in two, South Sudan's leader said on Friday. South Sudan President Salva Kiir said it increasingly appeared that "unity is not an option" following the January 9 vote, which will cap a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of civil war in the country. "At the moment all signs point to the fact that on January 9, 2011 Southern Sudanese people will vote overwhelmingly for their own independence," Kiir told an audience in Washington ... mehr

Southern Sudanese have crossed the Tribal Lines
17.09.2010 - Sudan Tribune
As the 2011 Southern Sudan and Abyei referenda is barely four months away, many unionists, local and international alike, fear tribal conflicts among southerners as a dividing factor that will ultimately lead the south into disintegration and create a situation of tribal anarchy in the break away south. The recent of these kinds is from Rhonda Shafei, a Columbia College Junior majoring in history. She is an executive board member of the Columbia International Relations Council and Association and the secretary general of the 2011 Columbia Model United Nations Conference and Exposition. Her reaction was in response to Hillary Clinton’s recent call for faithful and timely conduct of Referenda, in a metaphor in which she termed the Sudan as a “ticking time-bomb” ... mehr

Millions to be repatriated for voting
20.09.2010 - Aljazeera
As diplomats and activists express concern about the slow pace of logistics for south Sudan's referendum on succession, the southern government is planning to repatriate millions of refugees displaced during the civil war. The region, which is autonomus from the central government in Khartoum, wants the refugees to vote in January's referendum. The vote is a key part of the 2005 peace agreement that ended the war which led to 2 million deaths, according to aid agencies.
Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa travelled to Sindirun Lugara village in southern Sudan and spoke to families who have already started returning.
