Mali registered a strong growth in tourism

Mali has seen a boost in its revenues with tourism generating a good collection in the past year. Revenues generated by tourism in Mali went from just over $ 154 million in 2001 to more than $ 262 million last year 2007, the country's officials have reported.

However, there exist numerous other tourism resources relating to diverse cultures of the empires and kingdoms that have flourished over the centuries. National projects currently being pursued in Mali seek to open up and develop tourism resources, so as to allow new as well as existing forms of tourism. In terms of tourism development, which heads the Malian government's list of priorities, ecotourism combined with conventional tourism, and a policy of utilising the festivals held in various regions as tourism resources, are projected to contribute to an increase in visitor numbers ... mehr

Fabled Timbuktu bent on wooing tourists

TIMBUKTU, Mali — The fabled desert city of Timbuktu has long fired the imagination of travelers but an outbreak of fierce fighting in the region has sparked concern that tourists may snub this African treasure. "Each tourist season, we have around 11,000 tourists. That is good for the local economy," said Mahamane Dady, a local official from the Malian tourism office. "But with the recent problems linked to security in the region, we are crossing our fingers." Clashes between a regional branch of Al-Qaeda, called Al-Qaeda of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), and soldiers on July 4 killed "dozens" of people in the Timbuktu region, according to the army. Mali's President Amadou Toumani Toure has since stepped up an offensive to counter AQIM, announcing a "total struggle" against the group. So far, tourists are streaming into this UNESCO world heritage site in northwestern Mali, an oasis with towering mosques and monuments that emerged as a trade hub in the 13th century then developed into an important spiritual and intellectual centre of the Islamic world in the 15th and 16th centuries. Hmm.... ich war kurz vor dem start des putsches im 2012 in mopti... schon damals hatten die touristenobjektverkäufer mir ein lied gejammert das sie kaum mehr touristen sehen... aber neben bei.... war es der nach meiner beurteilung der am meisten negativ vom tourismus beeinfluste fleck den ich auf meiner ganzen Afrika reise bis jetzt gesehen hatte.
Ok es ist wirklich speziell und als das venedig von mali könnte man es schon bezeichen... ich fand Bandiagara sehenswerter als mopti, da es aber auf dem weg liegt lohnt sich ein abstecher und schon nur die fähre zu benuzen ist ein erlebniss.

Nun mal sehen ob ich wieder dort durchfahren werde...
