Jetzt ist e gerade ein Jahr her, dass ein kleiner Laster bei mir zuhause die Buecher abgeladen hat. Und immer noch keine Reklamationen, dass irgendetwas nicht passen wuerde. Das freut einem natuerlich!

I just finished to read Incident at Jebel Sherif... :D A really well done book covering the interesting aspect of the war "behind the lines", congrats Kuno! I can really recommend this book to all "Afrika" fans. The pictures are very impressive and they really transmit a desert feeling.....I look forward to see more projects in the future!!

Passion, as it is well known to our collector friends and history buffs, may move mountains (or most likely dig trenches…), put wings to dreams, commit to the extreme. This is what happened to this group of friends, led by Swiss Kuno Gross and to which the Italian Roberto Chiarvetto belongs, who made their dreams real to tell what they discovered in the middle of the Libyan desert, between the Kufra oasis and nowhere, and especially about the results of their personal and documentary research, over the diary of the three desert expeditions they made.
It was then possible to reconstruct, with accurate detail, starting from the wrecks of the vehicles of a New Zealander patrol from “T”Patrol of the Long Range Desert Group which clashed at Jebel Sherif with an Italian patrol of the Compagnia Autosahariana di Cufra, the first encounter between the British Special Forces and our Army, at the beginning of February 1941.
The authors have in fact tracked down veterans, talked with descendants, gathered documents, images, checked the accounts on the terrain, read all that has been published until now about the LRDG operations (and here, unfortunately, we must still notice the usual, stubborn lack of material from the Italian side), telling not only about the event itself, but the whole British raid, furthermore reconstructing not just the structure, the weapons and equipment of the confronting units, even the assignment of single troopers on the various vehicles, the damages and casualties occurred in terms of men and vehicles, the result of the fighting following the raid (Leclerc’s Free French attacked and occupied Kufra at the end of February) and the measures taken by the Italo-German Commands (the mission of the Paratroops [note: they were not Paratroops] of the Gruppe Schwerin). The capture of the patrol components warned our troops, that took the few possible measures and allowed them to evaluate, with raising dismay, the abilities of the Commonwealth troops, that completely unnoticed had been able not only to create a network of depots in the desert (the traces of which are documented in the book), but also to make so deep and undisturbed reconnaissances that allowed them to prepare extremely accurate maps (a task that in 30 years of Italian rule nobody had thought was necessary). All of that is illustrated with lavish graphics, more than 320 pictures, in the most part in full colour and big size, of military items, wrecks, findings and documents. The wartime iconography is plentiful and of the utmost interest and rarity, and includes archival and veterans’ pictures, stills from period newsreels and newspapers (just think that a full page from the Popolo d’Italia was devoted to the capture of the Commandare of the patrol), letters and personal notes. Not even the maps of the original route are lacking, along with those of the route travelled by the authors during these last years following their footprints. It is a masterly reconstruction, an example to point out for applause by everybody who values History.
