Sudan - Darfurs Rebellenführer Khalil Ibrahim getötet

Beitrag von Birgitt »

The Sudanese army says it has killed the leader of Darfur's main rebel group, Khalil Ibrahim of the Justice and Equality Movement (Jem). The report of his death, in fighting in the Wad Banda area of North Kordofan, could not be independently verified. Mr Ibrahim had returned from exile in Libya after the fall of Col Muammar Gaddafi's regime this year. If confirmed, his death would be a major blow to the Jem, which was behind several high-profile attacks.

Rebellen in Darfur nehmen 49 UNO-Soldaten gefangen

At least eight people, most of them young students, have been killed and more than 50 others injured during confrontations between police firing live bullets and peaceful anti-government protesters in Sudan’s western region of Darfur, multiple sources confirmed on Tuesday. Eye witnesses told Sudan Tribune that the events in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, were triggered by exorbitant increases in prices which extended to fuel on Monday, raising the price of a gallon to 40 Sudanese pounds, approximately 10 US dollars. The rise in fuel prices prompted the syndicate of public bus drivers to stage a strike which paralyzed transportation to and out of downtown on Tuesday.

A number of Sudanese opposition and civil society groups have strongly chided the authorities for killing peaceful protesters in Darfur’s southern town of Nyala, calling for an immediate probe into the tragic incidents. Eight people, many of them teenagers, were killed on Tuesday during anti-price rises demonstrations in the capital of South Darfur State, Nyala, where police fired live bullets on the demonstrators but said they used “minimum force” to contain what they described as a group of vandals supported by the region’s armed groups.

A massive protest over price rises erupted Monday in Rahid Al-Barad locality of South Darfur State, where demonstrators burned several government buildings in the latest expression of discontent against economic conditions in Sudan. Local authorities in Sudan’s western region of Darfur have introduced an additional set of security measures to protect road movement in response to increased carjacking incidents, an official announced on Monday. According to Ibrahim Ahmad Madibo, the minister of culture, media and tourism at Darfur Regional Authority (DRA), the new measures are designed to prevent the occurrence of carjacking to government vehicles. Madibo pointed out, as reported by Sudan official news agency SUNA, that these measures involve increasing the number of guards of government convoys as well as banning the movement of DRA vehicles at night times unless under emergency circumstances.

Sudan - Konflikt in Darfur schon vergessen ?
