Niger/Terrorism: Five French nationals kidnapped in Northern Arlit town

International Media reported that seven people, including 5 French nationals, with links to a French nuclear energy company were kidnapped in the West African nation of Niger on Wednesday night. According to Leila Touiti, spokeswomen of the multinational Areva, were the persons abducted by unknown gunmen in the northern town of Arlit.

An employee of Areva and his wife were among those abducted in the northern town of Arlit. The other five were subcontractors who worked for the French construction firm Vinci, said Touiti. Areva and Vinci have beefed up security measures for their employees in the area. Both companies are working closely with Nigerian and French authorities to secure the release of the hostages.

No group have made any claims or ransom demands so far. Although, it is known that Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) has brokered deals with groups of “mercenaries” to pay them for kidnapping Western nationals throughout the Sahel Region.

Der obige Zeitungsartikel redet nur davon, dass wahrscheinlich 'al-Kaida' fuer die Entfuehrungen verantwortlich ist. Ein anderer Zeitungsartikel erwaehnt aber auch kriminelle Tuareg... die dann eventuell die Geiseln an 'al-Kaida' verkaufen koennten.
