The killer road to Kigoma
19.09.2010 - The East African

Kigoma town on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, recently made famous by the hit song Cinderella by Bongo flava musician Ali Kiba, has a history going back to the days of explorers David Livingstone and Henry Morton Stanley [...] But recent cases of highway robberies by armed criminal gangs are jeopardising the regions’ tourism and general travel. The absence of a tarmacked road from Kahama to the lakeside town of Kigoma, does no help matter either [...] The 93km stretch from Nyakanazi to Kibondo is the most notorious. “Criminals here use machine guns to steal even a radio,” said Imani Domick, a public service vehicle (daladala) driver ... mehr

TIGHTEN BORDER SECURITY
19.01.2011 - The Citizen

The recent increase in crime in the border areas calls for decisive action. The incidence of crime in Kibondo District, Kigoma Region, for instance, has seen an absurd escalation, hence the need for concrete strategies to stop it. [...] Cases of armed robberies have been on the increase. With such an upsurge in insecurity, the people’s efforts to fully participate in productive activities are hugely undermined. Between last July and December, 11 people perished in 21 incidents of carjackings and murder ... mehr
