In December 2012, we will have completed our trip from Cape Town to Nairobi and we will sell our comfortable UK registered Landcruiser, who has performed brilliantly. We sell the car and all the equipment as a package. The 4.2L engine is incredibly powerful and we have not had any problems during our trip lafriquecestchique.com. The car is completely equipped with rooftop tent, awning, water tank and purification system, extra fuel tank, fridge,... The vehicle and chassis are in very good condition. Some cosmetic flaws (or more accurately character): a dent in the back and some missing mud guards. Impeccable service record: minor service every 5000km using original filters and API CG and above grade oils, major service every 25000 km in official Toyota garages.

The carnet is valid until end of January 2013. Available from 20/12/2012.

I am interested in your Land Cruiser. However, do I correctly assume that it is registered in South Africa? Then I guess I have a problem if I want to use it long term in Kenya.

Hi Karin,
sorry, that was not very clear in the ad. The car is registered in the UK and is on a carnet de passage. If you would buy our car, you would have two options. Either you import it in an African country, meaning that you would need to pay taxes. The rate is dependant on the country. This can become very expensive and virtually impossible to very cheap and possible depending on who you know and how lucky you are.
The second option is to keep it on a carnet. This is definetely interesting when you want to do some serious travelling in Africa with the car (it doesn't need tedious temporary import permits). We have asked the Royal Automobile Club in the UK how this procedure would go exactly, but you can already find some info in attachment. Basically, you would extend our carnet in your name and we would transfer the car registration documents in your name. For this you will need a postal address in the UK. Being non UK residents, we have used a 4X4 dealer's address in the UK. He handles all our mail. Even better would be to put it on a family member or friend's address in the UK.

Thanks for your speedy reply. I am Swiss and consider it too complicated and costly to buy a car registered in the UK, on a carnet de passage, although your Landcruiser is really great!
I will look for a 4WD registered in Kenya then, although I know it is not an easy undertaking as especially well kept Landcruiser’s are hard to find.
