TRAIN SERVICE BETWEEN TURKEY AND IRAQ TO BEGIN ON FEB. 18

ANKARA - Train service between Turkey and Iraq will be launched on February 18, as Anatolia news agency reports. Turkish Railways (TCDD) and Iraqi Railways (IRR) officials - who got together in Ankara on January 14 and 15 - agreed to launch train service between Gaziantep and Mosul, in line with an agreement dated October 15, 2009. The first train will take off on February 16 from Mosul to Gaziantep and the second will be from Gaziantep to Mosul on February 18. There will be scheduled train trips from Mosul every Tuesday at 12:00 p.m., and from Gaziantep every Thursday at 9:00 p.m. The service fare for the 18 hour ride will be between 25-35 euros.

ANKARA - The first passenger train between Turkey and Iraq began serving tourists today, as Anatolia news agency reports. The train began its trip in Mosul and will reach the southeastern Gaziantep Train Station today. In a press release issued today, Turkish Directorate General of Railways (TCDD) reminded that a Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the High Level Strategic Cooperation Council, comprised of officials from Turkey and Iraq, on October 15, 2009. The trip from Mosul to Gaziantep and vice versa will take approximately 18 hours, including customs check ups and passport controls. Seats in the passenger trains will cost between 25 and 35 euro. Officials from both countries expect the passenger trains to boost economic, social and cultural ties. The first passenger train en route to Mosul from Gaziantep will depart on Thursday, February 18.
