Algeria : 6 billion dollars earmarked for Hassi Messaoud new city

The Algerian energy and mines minister Chakib Khelil has announced that a financial package of 6 billion dollars will be assigned for the construction project of the new city of Hassi Messaoud in southern Algeria .

He said that the state would not shoulder alone the financing of such a mega project.

Chakib Khelil indicated that several foreign oil firms in conjunction with the national hydrocarbons company would take part in the financing of the project which is expected to be carried through within a 76 month deadline.

He also announced that the Algerian government was now examining a request from the national gas and electricity company Sonelgaz for a hike, in three stages, of the price of electricity in the next few months to offset the company's huge financial deficit.

ALGERIA: USD6 BILLION FOR NEW CITY NEAR SOUTHERN OIL WELLS

(ANSAmed) - ALGIERS - [...] The city will span on 4,483 hectares and will host 80,000 residents. It will be headquarters of the oil companies operating in the south and will replace the current conglomerate, which has grown anarchically around the oil wells and become a source of danger with the years. [...] The minister added that the construction works will start next year and are expected to take 76 months (16 of which for design). So far a Foundation of the new city of Hassi Messaoud (EVNH), led by a senior official of the energy sector, has been created. EVNH, in search of an engineering study capable of managing the project from the beginning to the end, called a tender in 2007. The offers were announced ten days ago. Currently there are two competitors: South Korean consortium Hassi Messaoud Korea Consortium (HMKC) and French-Tunisian group Iosim International which have submitted offers for 490 and 320 million euro respectively. HASSI MESSAOUD – Ein junges Dromedar kaut genüsslich an einem Dornenstrauch herum. Es ist in der Nähe eines weiß getünchten Brunnens angebunden, der dem algerischen Wüstenort seinen Namen gab: Hassi Messaoud, der Brunnen des Beduinenjungen Saoud, der hier im 19. Jahrhundert nach Wasser gegraben hatte und stattdessen auf Öl gestoßen war. Diese Anekdote ist handschriftlich auf Arabisch auf einer Metalltafel neben dem Brunnen festgehalten.
