ALGERIA: NEW ROAD LAWS, POINTS SYSTEM FOR LICENCES

ALGIERS - New road laws are currently being put in place in Algeria, one of the many government measures to try to stop the number of fatalities on the Maghreb country's roads, where every day 15 people are killed and 200 injured in auto accidents. Among the main points of the measures are the introduction of a points system on licences, a temporary permit for the first two years behind the wheel and professional licences for bus and truck drivers. Heavy penalties will be applied to those caught driving under the influence (more than 0.20mg) with sentences of up to 5 years in prison for accidents involving fatalities and fines of between 100 and 300 thousand dinars (between 1,000 and 3,000 euros). In fact, all fines will be on the increase, going from 2,000 dinars (40 euros) for not using seatbelts or driving while talking on onés cell phone to 6,000 dinars (60 euros) for passing over the centre line. With some 4,000 deaths per year, according to the official statistics of APS, Algeria is the fourth country in the world for the number of traffic accidents after the United States, Italy and France. With almost 5 million cars, it has the second largest number of cars on the continent after South Africa.
