SYRIA-LEBANON: BORDER CROSSING REOPENS AFTER 33 YEARS
07.07.2009 - ANSAmed
BEIRUT - After being closed for 33 years, the third border crossing between Syria and northern Lebanon has been reopened in the presence of official authorities from both countries. The Beirut press reported the event today. The Jisr al-Qamar border crossing point (Qamar bridge), located in the Wadi Khaled region (north eastern Lebanon, some 30km from the city of Homs in Syria) was reopened yesterday to private vehicles after reopening to pedestrian traffic on May 26. Closed in 1967, today it is the third crossing connecting Lebanon to neighbouring Syria. The other crossing points are the Arida crossing on the coast and the Aboudieh crossing on the northern border. The decision to reopen the crossing point was taken by the joint Syrian-Lebanese border committee, a body that was set up in the 1950s which many in Beirut want to abolish because it represents "a symbol of Syrian protection" exercised on Lebanon from 1976 to 2005.
