ENVIRONMENT: JORDAN TO ESTABLISH USD 6 BLN NATURAL RESERVES

AMMAN - The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature plans to establish three natural reserves in the Jordan Valley areas at a cost of USD 6 million, an official said today. The six year project will be the biggest in the kingdom as it will cover most of the country's western borders, said Tareq Abul Hawa, from Jordan Valley authority. Areas near al Yarmouk River, Masoud Mountain, Fifa Valley and Qatar are part of the 450 km long reserve. Experts from the International Federation for the Conservation of Nature will provide the Jordanian side with expertise to help conduct the project according to latest methods, said Abul Hawa. Jordan is considered a rout for migrating birds from Africa, Europe and Asia with millions of birds using its fertile lands to rest during their long journeys.

AMMAN - Jordan's Environment Ministry decided to establish nine natural reserves to expand the kingdom's green cover and preserve natural treasures, an official said today. The nature safe heavens will cover areas in the north and southern parts as well as the Jordan valley, the kingdom's fruit basket. Areas to be included in the reserves are Burqu, Yarmouk, Qatar, Jabal Masuda, Fifa, Jabal Attiyeh, Mrajel, Abu Rukbeh and Bayir said Tourism minister Khalid Irani. "The reserves will not be fenced but remain open spaces with excellent management in order to protect the country's treasures", said the minister, noting many threatened species will be protected from this scheme. The new areas aim to add to the kingdom's existing natural reserves which include Dana, Azraq, Shomari, Ajloun, Mujib, Wadi Rum and Dibeen Forest.
