Saudi Arabia’s king appeared on state television on Wednesday for the first time since he had a back operation on November 17 in a move designed to end speculation about the monarch’s health.
King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, 89, was shown seated and receiving well-wishers at a Riyadh hospital. The footage was aired with the kingdom awash with rumours that the health of the leader of the world’s key oil producer had taken a sharp turn for the worse, prompting concerns over the succession and triggering a volatile week of trading on the stock market in Riyadh.
