Al-Jazeera reveals new details about French nuclear tests in Algeria

150 ALN fighters used as guinea pigs

Some French former soldiers, who served for the French army in Algeria, during the colonial era, have called on the French Government to compensate them for the radiations emitted by the nuclear tests they were subject to in the Algerian desert in early 60’s. Meanwhile, a group of French researchers have asked the French authorities to reveal the secrets of the French nuclear record.

In this regard, a 50 minutes documentary conducted by an Algerian journalist serving at the Qatari TV Al Jazeera, has reported the witnesses of the Algerian victims of nuclear tests, especially at El Hamoudia, in Regane region.
The documentary dealt with some information evoked by some French papers, revealing that the French army used Algerians as guinea pigs in the tests, but announced that they were dummies in inhabited region, added the documentary.
“The victims, who were subject to these tests, were fighters at the Algerian Liberation Army, ALN, imprisoned by the French army. Their number reached 150 persons” said the journalist. They were conducted by the French Army from Telagh region in Sidi Belabes, to Regane, in view of getting rid of them. Some of which were sentenced to life imprisonment, while others were sentenced to death. The documentary has based on a book written by a French historian reporting that the guinea pigs were fighters at the ALN.
Still, the Algerian lawyer in charge of the nuclear tests’ record Ms. Ben Brahem, has accused the French of committing crimes against humanity. She added that both French and Algerian lawyers are coordinating in view to begin legal proceeding against France. The crimes committed by States, are not subject to expiry, concluded lawyer Ben Brahem.
