WATER: ALGERIA; BOUTEFLIKA INSISTS ON SAHARA RESOURCES

ALGIERS - The transfer of water from Sahara towards the Algerian region of Hauts Plateaux and the construction of new sea water desalination plants will be the priorities of the water sector in the next 2009-2014 five-year development plan, it was announced by Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika at the end of a meeting with the water resources Minister Abdelmalek Sellal. The news was reported by Aps. The head of state has asked to accelerate "the studies for the construction of three works for the transfer of water from the water table (present in the Algerian south-eastern regions) towards Djelfa, Tiaret, Biskra, Saida, Mila, Batna and Medea". All these cities are in the Hauts Plateux, in the centre of the country, which according to Bouteflika "will be in the future a real nursery for Algeria, thanks to the agricultural capacities of the region". The head of state remarked that "Algeria answered to the challenge of the sea water desalination plants" apart from "launching with success the works for the transport of water from In Salah to Tamanrasset". "Now we will also answer the challenge of the transfer of water from the south towards the Hauts Plateux". The huge water project launched in November envisages 1,200 km of underground pipelines which will carry every day 1.0 million cu m of water from In Salah (1,200 km south of Algiers) to the oasis of Tamanrasset (2,000 km south of the capital). Currently the construction of 13 desalination plants is underway; they will produce in total 2.0 million cu m of water per day. (ANSAmed).
