Algeria : Gendarmerie sends reinforcements to quell rising inter – community violence in Berriane

Latest reports from the southern city of Berriane speak of a renewed outbreak of inter – community violence between rival local residents causing one dead and at least 23 wounded.

The victim is a 62 – year old man who was reportedly stabbed to death with a knife in the street clashes which have engulfed the city of Berriane , in Ghardaia province, for the second day running.

A total of 23 other people were injured, some of them seriously.

The intercommunity unrest involving rival Ibadite residents of the embattled city also caused widespread material damage.

Eye – witness accounts told Echorouk newspaper that about 40 shops and businesses in addition to some public buildings had been damaged in the street rioting.

Several cars and lorries were also set ablaze by the rioters who went on a rampage across the once-quiet southern city.

The national gendarmerie has sent an additional 1,000 gendarmes to the troubled area in a bid to stem the unabated violence and restore law and order.

Security services impose curfew in Berriane
73 People injured and huge material losses in 3-days violent riots in Berriane near Ghardaia

The National Gendarmerie forces backed up with Police forces, have declared a partial curfew last Saturday night across several streets in Berriane, while Baba Saad Street has been the theater of violent clashes broken between the residents, and anti riots forces, which have attacked by stones and Molotov Cocktails.
In this regard, a source within the health sector in Ghardaia southern province, said the 71 injured including 2 seriously, and 12 wounded between the joint security forces and emergency services, is the toll of the escalating violence in Berriane, while the material losses are supposed reaching 100 billion. Seeking to bring peace back to the town, the local authorities have banned meetings and imposed a partial nighttime curfew.
In the meantime, additional security forces, health care units, and units specialized in criminality have been dispatched across the town, however the local authorities have fixed the period during which the security forces will be stationed in the blazing town.
In this context, the town’s schools have shut doors, rather than bearing school bags, middle schools and secondary schools have been shooting stones and Cocktail Molotov against the anti riots forces. Worse the town’s schools have been turned into barracks harboring Police and National Gendarmerie forces.

28 People including 2 hooded suspected to be involved in Berriane riots arrested

The security services in Berriane town, Ghardaia southern province, have arrested 28 people, including 2 hooded, to investigate with them, said the Minister of Communication, Mr. Abderrachid Boukerzaza, adding that the Government will be in charge of all losses caused by the violent riots.
Speaking to journalists in a weekly press conference, following a Government council meeting, Mr. Boukerzaza said the people suspected to be involved in the riots Berriane was prone to, are still held at Police stations for investigation, adding that the authorities are investigating about the real reasons breaking out these wide spread confrontations, emphasizing that all people whose involvement in vandalism acts or arson, will be severely punished, pointing out that the Government will be in charge of all the material losses resulting from these blazing riots.
Moreover, the same speaker said Algeria is ready to take part in any initiative seeking bringing peace and settling conflicts across its borders with Mali, confirming that Algeria has given its consent to Mali, to engage mediation process between the Tuareg rebels. So the visit yesterday of Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs meeting with the President Bouteflika, came in this context.
