Sie sind rot und stachelig, sie duften süß und frisch, und sie sind ein Symbol der Liebe und Verbundenheit: Rosen. Bald werden sie wieder millionenfach verschenkt, am Sonntag ist Valentinstag. Ein Großteil der Rosen, die dann über die Ladentische in die Hände der Liebenden gelangen, haben einen weiten Weg hinter sich. Etwa jede dritte Rose stammt aus Kenia. Gerade im Winter, wenn die heimische Blumenproduktion ausfällt, werden die Importe aus Ostafrika besonders wichtig. Mysterious disease kills fish in L. Naivasha

Thousands of fish in Lake Naivasha have died in the last two days raising fears among fishermen and locals. Part of the lake has been covered by the decaying fish as a heavy odour filters across the water body that is said to be on its deathbed. All species of fish in the lake have been affected by the mysterious disease with fingers pointing to toxic wastes from flower farms. A visit to the lake by KBC found fishermen collecting the fish from the lake and burying them by the beach as tourists unaware of the incident toured the lake. Govt slaps fishing ban in L. Naivasha

The government has slapped a fishing ban in Lake Naivasha following the mysterious deaths of hundreds of fish in the last two days. Issuing the ban, Naivasha district Public health officer Mr Samuel King'ori said that the ban would be in place until the problem was established and solved. "We have not established what the problem is and we therefore ban any fishing activity in the lake until we get to the root bottom of this," Addressing the press after touring the troubled lake, King'ori admitted that the problem was very serious. Kenya flower industry hit by flight cancellations

Kenya's flower industry has been badly hit by the cancellation of flights across Europe because of the ash cloud caused by a volcano in Iceland. The head of the Kenya Flower Council told the BBC it was costing growers between $1.5m and $2m a day. She said about 500 tonnes of flowers were currently being kept in cool storage at Nairobi's airport. Die Rose ist das Symbol der Liebe, gerade zum Valentinstag. Etwa jede dritte Rose, die heute in Europa verkauft wird, kommt aus Kenia. Von Romantik dort keine Spur. Die Rosenindustrie bringt Devisen ins Land und Arbeitsplätze - aber auch Probleme.
