Morocco: Revolt against Spanish firm's land grabInternet site http://www.mamfakinch.com is today reporting an incident that occurred on Sunday between security forces and the local population of the Larache region in northern Morocco. The inhabitants of the village of Chlihat allegedly prevented a Spanish firm from taking advantage of publicly-owned lands along with many additional hectares to construct a rice harvesting plant - land for which they have not yet received a penny in compensation.[...] Security forces are said to have intervened using tear gas and batons to prevent the inhabitants from approaching the area in question. A dozen people are reported to have been injured in the clashes and dozens arrested. According to the website, some of the local residents are accusing the police of having used rubber bullets to threaten them.
