RABAT - Fatima Zahra Mansouri, a 33-year-old lawyer, has been elected the first woman mayor of the Moroccan city of Marrakesh, a well-known tourist destination. She received 54 votes after winning local elections on June 12 as a candidate for the Party of Authenticity and Modernity (PAM) created in 2008 by Fuad Ali El Himma, a confidante of King Mohammed VI. The daughter of a former Pasha, Zahra Mansouri studied law in France. The PAM party won 6,015 out of 27,795 seats in the June 12 local polls to obtain 21.7% of the vote, putting it ahead of Istiqlal, the party of prime minister Abbas El Fassi.

RABAT - City councillors of Moroccòs Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) in Marrakesh announced a 48 hour hunger strike today in protest against a court's rejection of the election of the mayor, Fatima Zahra Mansouri, the first women to be elected to lead the city after the administrative elections of last June 12. The news comes in a memo from the party. Zahra Mansourìs election was ruled null and void on Monday by the administrative court in Marrakesh due to irregularites after a complaint issued by the leader of the Democratic Forcés Front (FFD) who was a candidate for the same district. The court was not specific on the extent of the irregularities and stated that it is in favour of a new vote count. The statement released by PAM declared the proceedings as "a conspiracy against democracy" and announced that all of the cities governed by the party will participate in the strike ... mehr
