Its hot, not only because of weather, it's the high prices too," said 47 year old taxi driver Ali, whose sun burnt face told a story of a typical Jordanian struggling against all the odds to make it to the end of the month. Ali arrived to the bustling market of Sweileh, a town where an army of civil servants live, to purchase necessary items ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, due within a few days."Every year life is getting more expensive," said Ali shaking his head as he paid at the cashier. In this town, and all around Jordan, the aura of Ramadan can be felt in the air. The markets are louder and streets are busier, as citizens scramble to make final preparations before the fasting month knocks on the door. Consumption levels soar and with that prices of basic food items, including red meet, which nearly doubled in the past one month in anticipation of a higher demand. With the purchase power of the dinar already losing foot under a weakening dollar and soaring inflation, citizens are feeling the squeeze ... mehr

RAMADAN: EGYPT; FOOD SALES REACH USD 5 BLN
26.08.2009 - ANSAmed

CAIRO - Turnover in Egypt's food sector during the month of Ramadan is heading for five billion dollars. This estimate comes in a report by the financial daily, Al Alam Al Yom, which cites international studies. Each day, Egyptians are spending nearly 180 million dollars on their food shopping, the paper notes, adding that the country imports 80% of the food it consumes over Ramadan. Its cereal imports exceed the total imported by the 27 nations of the European Union, in spite of the fact that government subsidies to food producers total 3.8 billion dollars a year, Al Alam Al Ayom writes. The main beneficiary of this explosion in consumption over Ramadan is China, which exports cereals, foodstuffs and other products for a total of 30 billion dollars to Moslem countries during the month.

RAMADAN: TUNISIA, 460 TONNES OF RED MEAT IMPORTED
27.08.2009 - ANSAmed

TUNIS - To deal with red and white meat demands, Tunisia has established a import programme to face potential shortages during this month of fasting. Four hundred and sixty tonnes of red meat (380 of beef, 80 of sheep) are expected to arrive to markets as well as 8,400 tonnes of white meat. Consumers are reporting sharp price increases for fish due mainly to the current limits on fishing activities, but also due to decreasing imports from Libya. Only bluefish is widely available in markets.
