Beide grippeähnlichen Erkrankungen kommen in Indien regelmäßig vor. Mit einem stärkeren Übertragungsrisiko und höheren Fallzahlen ist vor allem während und nach den Regenzeiten zu rechnen. Aus Delhi wird ein Ausbruch mit mittlerweile 800 Dengue-Erkrankungen gemeldet. Während es DEN in Indien schon immer gab, führte CHIC in den letzten drei Jahren zu größeren regionalen Ausbrüchen, im vergangenen Jahr insbesondere im Südwesten des Landes. Over 60 000 flood survivors in 5 districts of eastern Balochistan were
suffering from epidemics, particularly gastroenteritis and malaria.
Well-reputed sources in the Health Department told APP [Associated Press of
Pakistan] that the government had been apprised that over 60 000
flood-stricken people out of total 1.1 million in 5 districts of eastern
Balochistan, including Jhal Magsi, Jaffarabad, Nasirabad, Sibi, and Bolan,
had been suffering from epidemics after consumption of contaminated
floodwaters. They said that at 30 medical camps set up in flood-hit areas,
30 00 patients with diarrhea had been examined. They added that over 12 853
flood victim children suffering from diarrhea and gastroenteritis had been
vaccinated [it is unclear what the cohort was immunized against - Mod.LL]
in the 5 districts so far.

Another 5 people have been sickened by a cholera outbreak in an east China
county, local health authorities said Sat 4 Sep 2010. This raised the
number of total cholera cases in Mengcheng of Anhui province to 38, but all
earlier 33 cholera patients are recovered, the Anhui provincial health
bureau said in a press release.
The 5 new patients are under treatment in isolation, it said. Wang Lin,
deputy director of Mengcheng county health bureau, said the new patients
had not eaten together.
The cholera outbreak was detected on 16 Aug 2010, when the 1st 3 patients
were admitted into hospital. The 3 people ate at 3 different restaurants.
The provincial health and disease control experts were still working to
trace the source of the epidemic in the county of 1 million people.

A health official said today [8 Sep 2010] that 5 more people had died due
to encephalitis [in Gorakhpur], taking the death toll in Uttar Pradesh's
eastern region to 254 this year [2010]. "All the deaths occurred in BRD
Medical College Hospital," additional director (Health) UK Srivastava said.
Of the 5 dead, 2 belonged to Kushinagar and one each from Deoria, Santkabir
Nagar, and Basti, he added. Of the total 254 deaths, 238 occurred in BRD
hospital, while the remaining took place in other government hospitals of
the region -- Gorakhpur, Siddharthnagar, Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Basti,
and Deoria districts, he said.
Meanwhile, 30 new patients have been admitted in BRD Medical College
Hospital, while 6 were admitted at other government hospitals of the
region, he said. As many as 325 patients are presently undergoing treatment
at the BRD hospital and various other government hospitals of the region,
he said.

Cholera has struck the KBK (Koraput-Balangir-Kalahandi) districts in
Orissa, taking the death toll to 86 since January 2010. In the past 8
months, 3727 people have suffered from diarrhea.
Rayagada district is the worst affected with 37 deaths from diarrhea and
related ailments, which were later confirmed as cholera. Nuapada district
also reported 27 deaths. Among other KBK districts, Nabarangpur recorded 10
deaths, followed by Malkangiri (8 ), and Kalahandi (4).

A steep rise in malaria cases has been registered in the western part of
Rajasthan. The districts of Jaisalmer and Barmer registered more than 1000
cases last week.
The disease has emerged strongly in the Pokran area of Jaisalmer, where 2
children reportedly died of malaria. "There had been 432 cases of malaria
reported from the district last week, among these, 410 were of PV malaria,
while 20 were of PF malaria [_Plasmodium falciparum_], 2 were of mixed kind
[_P. falciparum_ and _P. vivax_]," said chief medical and health officer
(CMHO), Jaisalmer, M L Purniya.
Across the state, malaria has been registered at a comparatively low
incidence this year [2010]; however, districts of Jaisalmer and Barmer have
seen an uptrend in the disease.
The figures are being viewed with apprehension, as there have only been 769
cases of malaria reported from Jaisalmer since January 2010, including the
patients reported last week.
The adjoining Barmer district has been facing a similar issue: "There were
513 new cases of malaria reported last week, of these, 4 were of malaria
PF," said CMHO Barmer Ganpat Singh. The district has so far reported 695
cases this year [2010].
According to the health department officials, antilarval activities have
been intensified in the affected areas, while arrangements have been made
for handling the rising number of patients. As the malaria-causing mosquito
usually breeds in shallow and clean water, household tanks, desert coolers,
and shallow ponds often become breeding grounds.

The Cycling Federation of India (CFI) has decided to shift its
Commonwealth Games camp from Delhi to Patiala following an outbreak
of dengue fever among the cyclists. Delhi is reeling under dengue
attacks since June [2010] and nearly 1500 cases have already been
reported in local hospitals. While 25 participating nations have sent
letters to the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC)
enquiring about the disease, a host of countries including Australia
and Malaysia have recently issued travel advisories for their
citizens coming to Delhi for the Games.

Mumbai gilt mit mehr als 12.000 Erkrankungen mittlerweile als die Malaria-Hochburg des Bundesstaates Maharashtra. Ca. 47 % der gemeldeten Fälle kamen aus der 14-Millionen-Stadt an der Westküste. Bis Mitte August wurde ein Anstieg von 55% gegenüber dem Vorjahr gemeldet. Bisher gab es offiziell 31 Tote. Betroffen sind hauptsächlich die Bewohner der Slum-Gebiete und Bauarbeiter auf den über 100 Baustellen in der Innenstadt. Auch aus fünf Distrikten in Karnataka werden vermehrte Malaria-Fälle gemeldet. Die hohen Zahlen sind für diese Gegend relativ untypisch. Im südindischen Bundesstaat Kerala, wo Malaria noch vor einigen Jahren als eradiziert galt, wurden in der ersten Jahreshälfte 2010 bisher 82 Erkrankungen (im Vergleich zu 154 im gesamten Jahr 2009) gemeldet. Die meisten der Fälle kamen bei Wanderarbeitern aus den nördlichen Bundesstaaten (Orissa, Bihar, West Bengal) vor. Anfang September häufen sich nun auch Meldungen von vermehrten Malaria-Fällen im westlichen Rajasthan (Jaisalmer und Barmer). Dringend Mückenschutz beachten, ggf. Cholera, and other water borne diseases, which have claimed 39 lives
since the end of August 2010, have infected 124 more people in
Orissa's Rayagada district in the last 2 days, and triggered panic
among the residents, an official said Tue 14 Sep 2010.
According to the latest data, the number of people and villages
affected by the diseases has risen to 784 and 156 respectively. "Over
100 more people have been infected and the diseases have been
reported from 54 new villages," an official of the health control
room told IANS.
However, local newspapers claimed that the government figure was far
from the real figure. Dharitri, a vernacular Oriya daily, said in a
report on 14 Sep 2010 that the number of deaths in Rayagada district
has crossed the 100 mark and the number of people affected has
crossed the 1000 figure. Another vernacular newspaper 'The Samaja'
said the disease has also spread to the neighboring Gajapati and
Nabrangpur districts. The paper also said that during the past 2
days, at least 7 people have died of cholera and other water borne
diseases in Rayagada, Gajapati, and Nabrangpur.

[virus] here [in New Delhi], medical institutions have their hands
full. While the bigger hospitals are trying to cope by joining beds,
there are some where patients have little option other than the
floor. At Safdarjung Hospital, run by the government and one of the
biggest here, the rush of dengue patients has become difficult to
manage. Prathap Dutta, joint secretary of resident doctors
association, told IANS. As many as 150 patients, Dutta said, land up
at Safdarjung Hospital in a day. "We are running out of medicines,
intravenous fluids and saline drips," Dutta said.
The incessant rains lashing the city and the debris created by
construction for the upcoming Commonwealth Games are the main reasons
cited for the dengue outbreak in the capital. The Municipal
Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has confirmed 4 deaths from the disease.
Over 1836 dengue cases have been recorded so far in Delhi.
According to MCD, the number of dengue cases this year [2010] will
cross the 2006 figure of 3366 cases.
The corporation has found a high density of mosquito breeding in the
south and central areas of the city. So far, they have issued 45 532
notices to errant residents and housing societies.

Encephalitis claimed 5 lives in the district today [17 Sep 2010],
taking the death toll in such cases in eastern Uttar Pradesh to 306
this year, a health official said. All the 5 patients died at the BRD

Srivastava said, adding that 25 new patients were admitted today [17

The underlying fears of the vector borne disease dengue, affecting
the Common Wealth Games, seems to be turning into a grim reality. The
dengue menace in Delhi continues unabated with 76 more patients
testing positive yesterday [14 Sep 2010], taking the total number of
those infected to 1933. With 5 falling prey to the virus so far and
700 cases emerging in the last 10 days, the national capital is
witnessing one of the worst outbreaks of the deadly disease in the
last 5 years. According to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD),
the number of dengue cases this year [2010] will cross the 2006
figure of 3366 cases.
The present situation in Delhi is bothering several countries and
nearly 24 have issued travel advisories, alerting travelers about the
outbreak ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
With patients increasing in number, the medical institutions are
working overtime to cope with the disease. The situation is
particularly bad in government hospitals where beds are being joined
together to accommodate more patients.
People are now heading to the Delhi University campus to get a
check-up. According to official sources, on an average 450 to 475
people come to the general medical OPD [outpatient department] at the
University Health Centre every day.
The media reports alleged that the civic body officials ... are
deliberately playing down the dengue outbreak figures and hiding the
actual number of infections. Just 2 of Delhi's testing laboratories
have around 3000 confirmed cases since mid-July, which is much more
than the 1794 being claimed by the MCD from across the city. Dr
Naveen Dang of Dr Dang's Pathology Labs, stated, "Since mid-July
[2010], our lab has tested 1000 positive dengue cases, and there are
hundreds of such labs in the city. Apart from these labs, hospitals
also test samples. "This in itself speaks volumes about the number of
cases not making to the official record books."
However, denying the allegations, Dr VK Monga, chairman of MCD's
Public Health Committee stated, "Why would we conceal figures when we

[The situation in Delhi illustrates the difficulty in accruing
accurate case data in the face of an ongoing outbreak. Apparently,
there are many laboratories in the city doing tests for dengue virus
infection, and the comments above suggest that they are not reporting
their findings to a central public health office in the MCD. That
significantly under-estimates the number of cases and puts the public
health officials at a serious disadvantage in tracking the outbreak
in time and space and responding to what is happening in the field.
Development of a system to facilitate information flow needs to be in
place before an outbreak occurs, not during an epidemic. In this
electronic age, and with India a world leader in computer software
development, devising such a system should be possible.
The 20 Sep 2010 edition of the IC Tech News

reported more patients with dengue virus infections, taking the total

At least 10 people were down with dengue in Assam with health
authorities fearing an outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease [virus]
in the region, officials said on Wednesday [15 Sep 2010]. An Assam
health department spokesperson said 10 people were admitted in
various hospitals in Guwahati -- all of them confirmed as dengue cases.
"We have alerted all the government hospitals to check out for dengue
cases and be vigilant. We have to take appropriate steps to ensure
that all mosquito breeding grounds are destroyed so that we can avoid
an outbreak of dengue," the official said.

have been affected in the districts of Munger, Begusarai, and Patna
in Bihar till Tuesday, an official said on Wednesday [15 Sep 20109].

been directed to ensure proper sanitation, regular fogging, and
spraying of bleaching powder on streets and drain out accumulated water.

As the internal displaced people of recent floods have begun
returning home from makeshift relief camps in Karachi, it is feared
that many of them might carry dengue fever virus to the interior
areas of Sindh province. The dengue viral fever cases are rising in
Sindh province. This year 319 suspected dengue cases were reported
and after blood tests 180 of them were declared 'dengue positive. All
the dengue positive cases were detected from Karachi, saving a lone
case from Hyderabad. However, no death of any dengue patient is
reported as yet.

significantly under-estimates the number of cases and puts the public
health officials at a serious disadvantage in tracking the outbreak
in time and space and responding to what is happening in the field.
Development of a system to facilitate information flow needs to be in
place before an outbreak occurs, not during an epidemic. In this
electronic age, and with India a world leader in computer software
development, devising such a system should be possible.

At least 10 people were down with dengue in Assam with health
authorities fearing an outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease [virus]
in the region, officials said on Wednesday [15 Sep 2010]. An Assam
health department spokesperson said 10 people were admitted in
various hospitals in Guwahati -- all of them confirmed as dengue cases.
"We have alerted all the government hospitals to check out for dengue
cases and be vigilant. We have to take appropriate steps to ensure
that all mosquito breeding grounds are destroyed so that we can avoid
an outbreak of dengue," the official said.

As of Tuesday [14 Sep 2010], 2 people have died of dengue while 169
have been affected in the districts of Munger, Begusarai, and Patna
in Bihar till Tuesday, an official said on Wednesday [15 Sep 20109].
Principal Secretary Health, CK Mishra said municipal corporations had
been directed to ensure proper sanitation, regular fogging, and
spraying of bleaching powder on streets and drain out accumulated water.

reported that there were 18 new dengue cases in Patna bringing the
total number of confirmed dengue cases in the state to 69. This
includes 24 positive cases reported on Tuesday (14 Sep 2010), while
another 19 reported on Monday (13 Sep 2010). 2 persons have so far
died (official figure) and as many as 275 have been affected by
dengue across the state.

As the internal displaced people of recent floods have begun
returning home from makeshift relief camps in Karachi, it is feared
that many of them might carry dengue fever virus to the interior
areas of Sindh province. The dengue viral fever cases are rising in
Sindh province. This year 319 suspected dengue cases were reported
and after blood tests 180 of them were declared 'dengue positive. All
the dengue positive cases were detected from Karachi, saving a lone
case from Hyderabad. However, no death of any dengue patient is
reported as yet.

In Gorakhpur district, 7 more persons died of encephalitis, taking
the toll in the deadly disease in eastern Uttar Pradesh to 319,
health officials today said [20 Sep 2010]. All 7 patients died in
Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital [BRDMCH], additional
director (Health) UK Srivastava said, adding 39 new patients were
admitted in the hospital today [20 Sep 2010]. Srivastava said of the
total 319 deaths so far, 299 took place in BRDMCH while the remaining
were reported from government hospitals in Gorakhpur, Siddharthnagar,
Kushinagar, Maharajganj, Basti, and Deoria districts.

encephalitis virus (JEV) or something else. It is not clear if a
vaccination campaign against JEV has been mounted in the affected
areas. However, previous reports indicate that JEV infections account
for less than half of the cases, the etiology of the majority
remaining undiagnosed. Without a reliable diagnosis, effective
preventive measures cannot be implemented in the affected areas.

Beide grippeähnlichen Erkrankungen kommen in Indien regelmäßig vor. Mit einem stärkeren Übertragungsrisiko und höheren Fallzahlen ist vor allem während und nach den Regenzeiten zu rechnen. Aus Delhi wird ein Ausbruch mit mittlerweile 1.800 Dengue-Erkrankungen und 4 Todesfällen gemeldet. Während es DEN in Indien schon immer gab, führte CHIC in den letzten drei Jahren zu größeren regionalen Ausbrüchen, im vergangenen Jahr insbesondere im Südwesten des Landes. Conjunctivitis has been affecting the internally displaced persons
(IDPs) and other citizens across Sindh, especially in Karachi.
Sources said the IDPs were at a higher risk of being infected with
viral eye infections due to various reasons, especially personal
hygiene, which has yet to be addressed with the provision of toilette goods.
In the past 40 days, the number of IDPs affected with different types
of eye infections, including epidemic conjunctivitis, has reached 11
877, of whom 421 people had reported at 57 medical relief camps
across the city on Tue 21 Sep 2010 alone.
City District Government Karachi Health Executive District Officer Dr
Javed Nasir said viral eye infections have a self-limiting time
course of 5-15 days.
The use of contaminated water is one of the reasons for the spread of
eye infection, he added. Although anti-bacterial chlorine tablets
were added to the water, they need 2 hours to make the water
bacteria-free, he said. Generally, the IDPs do not follow
instructions and start using water before it is free from bacteria
[and viruses], he added.
Sindh Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed had ordered establishment of
11 special eye camps at the city's major hospitals, which have so far
examined 5030 people. 35 patients have been referred to other
hospitals for further treatment, he added.

[Conjunctivitis is an inflammation or infection of the thin layer
(conjunctiva) that lines the inside of the eyelid and covers the
white part of the eye. Inflammation can cause blood vessels in the
eye to become larger. And that can make the white of the eye look
pink or red. Conjunctivitis is a common health condition worldwide.
The 3 most common types of conjunctivitis are viral, bacterial, and
allergic. Currently, outbreaks are occurring throughout the world
(see ProMED-mail references below), and not surprisingly, the extent
of the outbreak in disaster-struck Pakistan far exceeds that observed
elsewhere. A viral etiology is presumed in most of these outbreaks,
but in no case has this been confirmed unequivocally. In view of the
ubiquity of conjunctivitis, in future, outbreaks will be reported
only where the etiologic agent or agents have been identified.
