Thu 5 Jun 2008, 15:34 GMT

BAMAKO (Reuters) - Mali's armed forces are engaged in heavy fighting with Tuareg rebels after attacking their positions in the northeast Kidal region, and both sides had suffered casualties, a senior Malian officer said on Thursday.
