MOTORWAYS OF THE SEA: FIRST RO-RO JOURNEY SAVONA-ALGIERS

SAVONA, MARCH 22 - After the success of last week's trial journey, the roll-on/roll-off ship Amirouche is to return to Savonàs Auto Terminal in the next few days. According to rumours on the specialist website Ship2shore, the ship, which belongs to Algerian company Nolis, will become a weekly fixture in the port of Savona. Neither the company nor the terminal operator have confirmed the rumours, but it is thought that in the next few days the first regular ro-ro link between Italy and Algeria (operated by Nolis) will begin, signalling an important step forward for relations between Italy and North Africa. Amirouche was built in Denmark in 1984 and recently modernized. With a capacity of 2,200 linear metres, the ship can hold about 170 trailers. According to Ship2shore, the operation is linked to the activities of Algerian group Cevital and its subsidiary Mediterranean Float Glass (which also has an office in Trinità, near Cuneo), the main supplier of panes of glass for the numerous Piedmont-based producers.
