I was wondering: in Tunis is seems possible to get transit visa for Libya, after three weeks waiting. Maybe you could then cross from Kufra direct to Ounianga, or from Katrun to Bardai.

Situation in Abeche seems ok. I think it should be more or less safe to continue from there to Nyala and Khartoum, if you have visa. My friend wanted to ship to Douala, but finally choose Cotonou. Just came back from Tibesti. Drove my Landcruiser from Holland to Ndjamena along the Atlantic route. From Ndjamena continued to Mao, Zouar and Bardai. Also visited the Trou Natron.
