JORDAN: CZECH DE-MINING TEAM TO CLEAR RIVER FROM MINES

AMMAN - A contingency of Czech soldiers is expected to arrive in Jordan next month as part of an agreement with Jordan to clear mine fields near the Jordan river which separates the kingdom from Israel, a Jordanian official. The land mine squad, which will be equipped with two bomb clearance machines, is expected to stay nearly three months in the border town of Karamah, said the official who did not want to be named. The land mine area that will be cleared is around 6000 hectars, most of which were planted during the 1967 war with Israel, which lead to the occupation of the West Bank and eastern part of Jerusalem. The desert kingdom, which was involved in several wars with Israel since 1948, launched a project to clear all existing mine-fields following the signing of Wadi Araba peace treaty with Israel in 1994. The Jordanian government hopes to enable area residents utilize the abundant farmlands and water resources in the designated area, where the development has been hampered by the mine fields. Officials put their sight on 2012 to remove the last mines, in line with Ottawa Mine Ban treaty.
