South Sudan rebel group attacks town in oil-rich state

Rebels from the South Sudan Liberation Army have attacked a town in the oil-rich Unity State and at least 75 people have died [...] The SSLA say that they killed more than 700 soldiers in the attack. Rebels' claims that they are now in control of town of Mayom have been dismissed by locals and officials. On Friday, rebels from the South Sudan Liberation Army (SSLA) warned United Nations staff and aid workers to leave the state. This warning has now been extended to the nearby Warrup state. The rebels say they are fighting against corruption, underdevelopment and the domination of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement, the former rebels who now run South Sudan. They are also angered by what they believe is the domination of the Dinka ethnic group. Most of the SSLA are from the Nuer ethnic group, the second biggest in South Sudan ... mehr

The United Nations is sending troop reinforcements to the South Sudanese town of Pibor to prevent an attack by members of the Lou Nuer ethnic group.

On Saturday, members of the Lou Nuer group attacked Pibor, home to the rival Murle group, in the latest of a series of reprisal attacks over cattle raids. Tens of thousands of the Murle fled. Some 6,000 Lou Nuer fighters are chasing them, reportedly to take revenge for previous attacks and to rescue dozens of abducted children.

Fighters from the Lou Nuer ethnic group are pursuing members of the Murle community, reports say, as a deadly vendetta over cattle raiding continues.

Die Lage sei "sehr schlimm", sagte Cien in der südsudanesischen Hauptstadt Juba. Am Wochenende waren rund 6000 bewaffnete junge Männer vom Stamm der Lou Nuer in das im Osten des Landes gelegene Pibor eingedrungen, das von Angehörigen der Murle bewohnt wird. Die Angreifer brannten Hütten nieder und plünderten ein Krankenhaus der Hilfsorganisation Ärzte ohne Grenzen. Grund für den Angriff sind angebliche Viehdiebstähle der Murle. Während einige Kämpfer der Lou Nuer noch in Pibor seien, würden andere außerhalb der Ortschaft Jagd auf die Bewohner machen, sagte Cien.

Scores of people have been slaughtered after fleeing attacks by fighters from a rival ethnic group in South Sudan, according to numerous reports. John Boloch of South Sudan's Peace and Reconciliation Commission said at least 150 people, mostly women and children, had been killed over the past two days. Another woman told the BBC that 20 of her relatives had been shot dead.

South Sudan accused north Sudan on Tuesday of supplying arms to tribes in volatile Jonglei state, allegedly to destabilise the Africa’s newest nation ... Colonel Phillip Aguer, spokesman of the country’s army told journalists at weekly press briefing on Tuesday that north Sudan had supplied many of the weapons used the fighting. “All the fire arms and other type of guns you see at the hands of both Murle and Lou Nuer in Jonglei, were deliberately supplied by the Sudanese government in Khartoum to these tribes through late renegade George Athor to destabilise security of this country”. Athor was killed in fighting with the SPLA in December 2011.

Inzwischen scheint die Regierung des Südsudan die Situation unter Kontrolle zu haben ... On Wednesday South Sudan’s cabinet held an extraordinary meeting, chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit, during which it was briefed by the Vice President, Riek Machar on the situation in Jonglei state. The cabinet deliberated on the situation and passed a resolution declaring Jonglei state a disaster area ... Authorities say that the Lou-Nuer youth have returned and are on the way back to their territories, with tens of thousands of heads of cattle. Cattle are important for status and for bride prices in many South Sudanese communities. The resolution also called for the disarmament of the whole of Jonglei state to enable the government to address the underdevelopment of the state. The cabinet fell short of declaring a state of emergency in the state.

The new commissioner of Duk County, Elijah Mochnom Wuor confirmed to Sudan Tribune in Bor that his county, especially Duk Payuil, has lost many heads of cattle to Murle raiders who killed two people.

... über 3100 Murle getötet ... Diese Zahl nannte der Chef der örtlichen Distriktverwaltung, Joshua Konyi, ein Murle, ... gegenüber ... AFP. Die Uno, die eine Beobachtermission nach Pibor ... entsandt hatte, konnte ein Massaker solchen Ausmasses allerdings nicht bestätigen. Laut gut unterrichteten Quellen in der Hauptstadt Juba wurden im Zug der Auseinandersetzungen 240 verletzte Murle aus dem Gebiet ausgeflogen, was nach den Erfahrungen auf eine niedrigere Opferzahl schliessen lässt.

Conflict between the Murle and Luo Nuer tribes in South Sudan’s Jonglei State continued on Sunday with the Murle accused of carrying out a revenge attack on Akobo County ... On Sunday Commissioner Joyol told Sudan Tribune that 60 had died. However, the following day when people returned after fleeing over night he revised the figure to 23. This figure has not been verified independently.

Da der Link von Presseartikeln nach einiger Zeit ja ins Leere läuft, habe ich die im Artikel aufgeführte Tabelle, in der die Opfer gelistet sind, ins Forum gerettet. Die dort angegebenen Zahlen stammen vom "Bürgermeister" der am meisten betroffenen Region Pibor County. Laut UN sind diese Zahlen nicht belegt und liegen nach deren Einschätzung deutlich darunter. Wie dem auch sei, auch wenn nur ein Opfer zu beklagen ist, dann ist es eins zu viel.

Sehr interessant in der Tabelle ist die letzte Spalte, nämlich die Stückzahl des Viehs. Knapp 90.000 Tiere sollen gestohlen worden sein bei den Überfällen. Ich denke diese Zahl macht deutlich, wie wichtig das Vieh für die Tribes dort ist, welchen Stellenwert es genießt.

The cycle of violence in Jonglei state of South Sudan has continued today with youth from the ethnic Murle community launching a counter attack on Uror County, burning down villages, in which many people died, according to a local official. The attack, which occurred at 5pm local time, targeted Wek and Panyok villages in Tiam Payam [district], a Sudan Tribune reporter said. According to one of the local administrators of Wek Boma, Tip Chuol, the attackers were heavily armed and overran the villages, rustling a large number of cattle in a round of fighting that continued until midnight ... The affected area is just about 10 km from the Pajuk, an area visited by a Sudan Tribune journalist just 2 hours before the attack took place.
