TERRORISM: MOROCCO, 24 PEOPLE ARRESTED

Twenty-four persons have been arrested by Moroccòs security forces across the country on charges of forming part of a terrorist network specialised in recruiting volunteers to send to Iraq as suicide bombers, or to join Al Qaeda guerrillas in Somalia and Afghanistan. According to a press release issued by the Interior Ministry, the accused persons, who are said to have worked together with affiliates living in Sweden, Belgium and in the area between Syria and Iraq, sent around twenty aspiring suicide bombers from these countries into Iraq, adding a dozen Moroccan recruits to their numbers. According to the MAP press agency, the accusations run that the arrested persons were planning attacks in Morocco and had been awaiting Al Qaeda explosives specialists for the purpose.

TERRORISM: ALGERIA; ONE SOLDIER KILLED, 3 INJURED IN ATTACK

ALGIERS - One soldier is dead and three injured in an explosion yesterday evening in Draa El Mizan, Algeria, close to the district capital of Cabilia, Tizi Ouzou. According to local press which quoted the security forces, the soldiers were part of a patrol engaged in a large-scale anti-terrorism operation which was launched in Cabilia last Thursday. The mountains around the Berber region continue to be considered the hideout of Al Qaeda for the Islamic Maghreb in the north of Algeria, while signs are growing of an ever more solid presence of armed groups in the deep south, on the borders with Mali and Niger. On Friday, ten members of the north African wing of Al Qaeda were killed by security forces in clashes near Beni Abbes, 950 km south of Algiers.

ALGERIA: AL QAIDA EMIR KILLED - WANTED FOR 14 YEARS

ALGIERS - Mourad Louzai, one of the two men killed on October 7 by the Algerian army and considered one of the most important emirs (terrorist leaders) of Al Qaida for the Islamic Maghreb, had been wanted by security forces for the past 14 years. The APS agency reports that Louzai, also known as Bouh Abou Qotada El Salafi, 43, was at the head of a criminal organisation in charge of internal relations among the commands of various areas in the country. Having begun working with armed groups with Islamic roots in 1994, he was later named emir of the "Katibat Al Ansar", a unit of the Salafite Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC) active in the Algiers region, and took an active part in numerous terrorist attacks. The emir was killed on October 7 in the El Bayadh region (in south-western Algeria) while travelling in his car with another high-level member of the organisation. According to official sources, numerous fighters of the North African wing of Al Qaida have been killed in the last few weeks, the last three during a wide-ranging military offensive still underway in the Kabylie mountains.
