Al Qaeda's North African Influence
And Pakistan on the Brink
15.01.2011 - familysecuritymatters
The tragedy in Tucson has eclipsed other news this past week. On the same day that the shooting took place, a shoot-out took place in Mali, northwest Africa, in which nine people died. Al Qaeda in the Maghreb (AQIM), the North African branch of the Al Qaeda network, had only the day before kidnapped two young French men in Niger ... mehr

America reveals its two minds on Algeria
17.01.2011 - Daily Star
The State Department cables on Algeria released by WikiLeaks late last year suggest that when it comes to security in North Africa and the Sahel region, the United States regards Algiers as the key actor. However, the cables also reveal serious doubts over the future political direction of the Maghreb’s biggest nation, and the deadly rioting recently in cities across Algeria bear out such concerns ... mehr

Al-Qaeda and organized crime: two sides of the same coin
17.01.2011 - alawsat
The name Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb [AQIM] has become synonymous with abductions, hostage-taking operations, drug smuggling and bank robberies. The overlap between organized crime and terrorism has become very strong to the point that some analysts believe that Al-Qaeda is shifting from criminal activity for the purpose of financing terrorism to [solely] making money. From the time it joined Osama Bin Laden's organization at the end of 2006, AQIM has resorted to new means of obtaining funds; including the abduction of foreign nationals, blackmail, and drug smuggling ... mehr

New Report Warns al-Qaeda Is Extending 'Arc of Instability' Across Africa, Threatens to Exploit North Africa Unrest, Western Sahara Impasse to Target US, Europe
01.02.2011 - Digital Journal
An international panel of experts issued a new report and their 13th annual review on terrorism at the National Press Club yesterday [...] "Of grave concern," says the new report, authored by Prof. Yonah Alexander, Director, ICTS, is that "al-Qaeda has established a safe haven and breeding ground" in the failed/fragile states of Africa that border the Sahara, tracing an "arc of instability that stretches from the Red Sea and is poised to reach to the Atlantic." The report is a one-year update of a January 2010 ICTS study documenting the chronology since 9/11 of the rising threat from al-Qaeda and other terrorists in the Maghreb and Sahel of North and West/Central Africa ... mehr

Business as usual.

KATZ: Al Qaeda’s emerging Africa enterprise
Blocking links with local populations is key to extremists’ defeat
10.02.2011 - Washington Times
Most of the American media has focused on the late-2010 attempt by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) to detonate explosive-laden ink cartridges in cargo planes over the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the continued threats emanating from Yemen. That nation certainly provides favorable conditions for extremist groups such as AQAP to fester and export terror. However, Africa, specifically theSahel and the Horn of Africa, arguably afford the most growth potential for two burgeoning al Qaeda franchises: al Qaeda in the Islamic Magreb (AQIM), a morph of an earlier ultraviolent, Algerian Islamist movement, and Somalia‘s al-Shabaab group, which effectively controls 80 percent of Somalia and pledged loyalty to al Qaeda senior leadership in early 2010. AQIM, operationally based in desolate northern Mali, is now a regional menace in Africa’s Sahel region and poses an increasing threat to U.S. interests in North Africa as well as Mediterranean Europe ... mehr

Experts Say al-Qaida Center May Shift to Sahara, Sahel
Terrorism experts say the world has every reason to be concerned about terrorism in 2011 and beyond. They say al-Qaida may be slowly dying in Afghanistan, but its tentacles around the world live on in very remote areas. They also say frustration among the poor in the Middle East and Africa could lead to new ethnic and political conflicts. The turmoil, they say, could embolden al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb popularly known as AQIM in that region. mehr...

Ursula
