Re: Sicherheitslage in Nordafrika - Sahara
Hallo Ursula,

Re: Sicherheitslage in Nordafrika - Sahara
Hallo Ursula,

Re: Sicherheitslage in Nordafrika - Sahara

Niger Algerien AQIM AQMI
Niger / Terrorism: 20 terrorists killed near Agadez
Quoting security sources, the Algerian daily El Khabar reported on Wednesday that at least 20 AQIM (Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb) terrorists were killed recently in clashes with smugglers in the city of Agadez, in the north of Niger. The violence erupted as the criminals demanded terrorists to pay fees for passing through their territories.
It should be mentioned that clashes between the terrorists and criminal gangs in this area became regular since last January. According to the source, criminals might have bee, paid by western intelligence services to hunt AQIM terrorists in northern Niger.
Separately the source revealed that two Algerian and three Mauritanian "repentant terrorists" surrendered to Algerian army in the south from Tamanrasset after having fled from AQIM training camps in northern Mali.

Canadian soldiers needed to fight terror in Africa, says former al-Qaida hostage

A top diplomat held hostage by al-Qaida in Africa says Canadian troops have an important role to play on the continent now more than ever, as the threat of terrorism continues to increase there. Al Qaeda offshoot gains ground in Niger, threatens uranium mines
Through intimidation, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, disrupts uranium mining in Niger
22.03.2011 - globalpost
[...] Niger’s uranium deposits, among the world’s largest, have drawn the attention of two very disparate groups. On one hand, international investors, led by the French state-owned energy giant Areva and joined more recently by the Chinese National Nuclear Corporation, have long coveted these reserves for use as nuclear fuel. On the other hand, Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, known as AQIM, which thrives in the vast and porous Sahara spreading across Northern Niger and its neighbors in the Sahel, has come to regard Western interests in the region, drawn by the lure of uranium, as an easy and readily accessible target ... mehr

Peter

The Genesis of Terrorism in the Sahara
28.03.2011 - ISN
News of the rise of a new force in the Sahara - Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb - has reached the Western press through its kidnapping of European aid workers [...] How can a violent group sustain itself in a region it is largely alien to? The difficult to control Saharan terrain might be a factor but does not constitute the sole explanation: AQIM didn't fill in a political void. I would argue that the GSPC, which became AQIM in 2007, managed to gain a foothold in Algeria's bordering Saharan countries through a combination of smart business strategies, astute efforts to foster a modus vivendi with local populations and, indirectly, permissive circumstances engendered by central governments policies in the region ... mehr
