Le terrorisme, l’un des principaux sujets de la réunion des ministres de l’Intérieur de la Méditerranée occidentale qui se tenait hier à Nouakchott, a changé d’envergure dans la région Maghreb-Sahel, passant d’un terrorisme limité à tel ou tel pays à un « terrorisme de zone ». « Auparavant l’action des GIA (Groupes islamistes armés) puis du GSPC (Groupe salafiste pour la prédication et le combat) qui leur a succédé se limitait au territoire algérien », a rappelé hier à des journalistes un haut responsable policier français, sous le couvert de l’anonymat.

NOUAKCHOTT (Reuters) - A Mauritanian court on Sunday began the trials of 19 suspected members of Al Qaeda's north African wing, including three men suspected of the killing of four French tourists in 2007. The trials come amid growing efforts by the governments of Algeria, Mauritania, Mali and Niger to counter a wave of recent desert kidnappings of foreigners claimed by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM. NOUAKCHOTT — A Mauritanian court convicted a man charged with an Al-Qaeda-linked attack in which four French tourists were killed in 2007, sentencing him to six years hard labour. "The verdict was handed down for the first (defendant) to have appeared, Abdallahi Ould Mohamed Sidya. He was sentenced to six years of prison with hard labour," said his lawyer, Ahmed Ould Ely, after leaving the courtroom. A Mauritanian court has sentenced three al-Qaeda suspects to death for the murder of four French tourists in 2007. It is the first death sentence passed in the country for more than 20 years. The three men were convicted of killing the tourists, who had stopped to picnic beside a highway near the southern town of Aleg. The family of at least one defendant has promised to appeal.
